Replacing a water meter seems like a simple job, but many people make mistakes without professional guidance. Below, we'll talk about errors might happen during the actual repair process, and highlight key issues to be aware of and providing some advice.

Remove the old water meter

  1. Before removing the old water meter, place a basin to catch the water and tie the pipe with a string. Then use a low-power hair dryer to blow air through the outlet for about three minutes to ensure it’s completely dry.

  2. When removing the meter, be sure to sufficiently release the pressure in the piping. If the pressure in the pipe is high, water may spurt out of the meter’s mounting part.

  3. When disassemble the old meter, be careful not to damage the pipe or the water meter base.

  4. Check the old water meter and record the reason.

Install the new water meter

  1. Don't Ignore professional qualifications. Contact the local water supply company or a certified contractor approved by the housing authority. You can verify their qualifications on the official website of your local water utility.

  2. Choose the right size and thickness of the O-ring in order to avoide water leak. The correct parameters should be measured based on the marks of the old gasket.

  3. Check the flow direction of the new water meter. There was a case where a meter was mounted backward, causing serious measurement errors during property inspection. After installation, the connection should be securely locked with a special wrench according to the thread inspection manual.

Inspection after installation

  1. Open the valve slowly, release the air, and check for any leaks.

  2. Confirm that the water meter works properly (for example, no reverse flow or jamming).

  3. Record the new meter’s serial number and initial reading for future management and billing.
